道，可道，非常道。

The way that can be spoken of is not the eternal Tao;

名，可名，非常名。

The name that can be named Is not the eternal name.

无名，天地之始。

The nameless was the beginning of heaven and earth;

有名，万物之母。

The named was the mother of the myriad creatures.

故常无欲以观其妙。

Hence always rid yourself of desires in order to observe its secrets,

常有欲以观其窍。

But always allow yourself to have desires in order to observe its manifestations.

此两者，同出而异名，

These two are the same but diverge in name as they issue forth.

同谓之玄，

Being the same they are called mysteries,

玄之又玄，

Mystery upon mystery--

众妙之门。

The gateway of the manifold secrets.
